Bike Safety Tips

  • Wear an approved bicycle helmet to protect your head
  • Safety check your bicycle before you ride it: make sure the brakes work properly, the tires are inflated, and the steering and seat are adjusted and secure
  • Obey the rules of the road, stop for stop signs and obey all traffic signals
  • Ride in single file, one behind the other and don’t forget to signal your intention to turn left or right or stop.
  • Cycle in the same direction as traffic and ride along the side of the roadway
  • Sidewalk cycling is dangerous, many collisions between cyclists and motor vehicles occur where sidewalks, driveways and parking lot access become unexpected intersections.
  • A bicyclist is not permitted to ride in a pedestrian crosswalk or crossover, walk your bike across
  • Be seen, it is important for cyclists to be as visible as possible. This means having a red reflector or red light to the rear and a white light to the front when riding between ½ hour before sunset and ½ hour after sunrise
  • Be heard, all bicycles are required to be equipped with a bell or a horn to be used as a warning device in traffic
  • Passengers are not allowed on a bicycle designed for one person, one seat, one set of pedals, one set of handlebars means one rider only
  • Packages should be carried in an approved carrier or in a back pack
