Safety Patrol:
The Safety Patrol Program in Chatham-Kent is organized and monitored
by the Chatham-Kent Safety Patrol Committee. Member agencies include:
Lambton-Kent District School Board, Canadian Automobile Association and
the Chatham-Kent Police Service.
Safety patrollers are students from grades five through eight who
volunteer for the much needed position at their school and are chosen by
the teacher safety patrol supervisor and school principal. There are
currently 14 safety patrol teams across Chatham-Kent.
Safety patrollers are trained each September at the annual Safety
Patrol Training Camp. They receive incentives such as candy, pencils and
theatre passes for the volunteer hours they put into assisting fellow
students safely across their school crossings.
Every May the Chatham-Kent Safety Patrol Committee in cooperation
with the Lambton-Kent District School Board, Industrial Accident
Prevention Association and the Chatham-Kent Police Service host a Safety
Patrol Awards Ceremony. Third and fourth year safety patrollers receive
medallions for their dedication to the program. Each of the teacher
safety patrol supervisors award an IAPA sponsored Safety Patroller of
the Year plaque to the most dedicated and deserving student on their
patrol team.
Each summer the top three safety patrol teams and their supervisor
are presented with a trophy for their dedication to the program and
treated to mini golf and lunch at the Chatham Golf and Fun Centre.
