Firearms Registration

Firearms Information
Firearm Information: Can be obtained from the Canadian Firearms
Centre (CFC) website:
www.cfc-ccaf.gc.ca.
For further assistance you may also contact the CFC by calling
1-800-731-4000.
Registering Firearms:
The Chatham-Kent Police Service (CKPS) no longer register firearms.
The Canadian Firearms Centre (CFC) now has an application centre for
firearm registration. For more information on how to register a gun or
transfer a firearm to another person contact the 1-800 # or the CFC
website:
www.cfc-ccaf.gc.ca.
Authorization to Transport (ATT)( handguns):
Authorization to transport (ATT) handguns must also be obtained by
calling 1-800-731-4000.
Firearm Licences and Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) (to
acquire or possess firearms in Canada):
It is now law in Canada that anyone owning or acquiring any type of
firearm must possess a valid Firearms Licence. To obtain a new
Possession Acquisition Licence (PAL) you must first obtain a Canadian
Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) Certificate. CFSC instructors in your area
can be found on the CFC-website:
www.cfc-ccaf.gc.ca.
Once you receive your CFSC Certificate citizens can then apply for a
Firearms Licence (PAL). Applications for a PAL can be downloaded from
the CFC-website:
www.cfc-ccaf.gc.ca.
Members of the CKPS Firearms Unit are contracted by the Canadian
Firearms Centre – Orillia, Ontario to review all firearm licence
applicants and renewals for the Chatham-Kent area. An Area Firearms
officer and a Provincial Firearms Officer investigate, approve or refuse
firearm licence applications and give evidence as required at Revocation
Hearings.
No one wants guns to get into the hands of the wrong people – known
criminals, violent offenders or persons with questionable intentions
regarding Public Safety Issues. The Firearms Unit is in essence, our
area’s screening site, investigating applications that have been “red
flagged” by the Canadian Firearms Centre. Licences already held by
residents can also be reviewed and Revoked if necessary.
The majority of licence holders and those wishing to apply for a
licence are abiding citizens and the Canadian Firearm Centre has many
checks and balances in place to ensure the responsible ownership of
firearms.
If you are unable to obtain the necessary information you require
from the 1-800 # above, you may also contact one of our Firearms
Officers in Ridgetown (519) 674-3315.
