Traffic Tip – Red Lights and Green Arrows
Did you know that you cannot turn right on a red light when a green arrow facing you is directing traffic to turn left? This is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act. When facing a red light, drivers must come to a complete stop, and then may turn right when it is safe to do so. The exception is when the traffic light is red and simultaneously a green arrow appears directing traffic to turn left. In this situation, all traffic facing the red light must stop except the traffic turning left. Drivers who turn right in this situation commit an offence that could cause a collision.
