Auxiliary Unit

There are many people who wish to experience police work through active involvement. The Chatham-Kent Police Service Auxiliary Unit offers opportunities to citizens to become part of the police organization in a volunteer capacity.

The Auxiliary Unit presently has an authorized complement of 14 members. Auxiliary members are volunteers who assist police officers at community events such as parades, special events, crowd control, and also accompany officers on patrol.

Auxiliary members are selected on the basis of their ability to complete the training program and their availability for service throughout the year. Members commit to at least a two-year term and volunteer for a minimum of 16 hours each month. The members must also attend regular
in-service training sessions as set out by the training officer. Initial training consists of 40 hours of instruction in such topics as powers of arrest and criminal code, and physical restraining methods.

Auxiliary Requirements

1. Are a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
2. Are at least 20 years of age and can produce a birth certificate or other proof of age.
3. Are certified by a legally qualified medical practitioner to be in good health, and mentally and physically fit for duty as a member of the Auxiliary Police.
4. Produced satisfactory proof of having successfully completed at least four years of secondary education or the equivalent.
5. Are of good moral character and habits and submit at least three satisfactory references as to their character and previous employment.
6. Subscribe to an Auxiliary Member’s oath in a form prescribed by the Regulations of the Police Services Act and the Chatham-Kent Police Service Oath of Secrecy.
7. Satisfactory complete all tests, examination, interviews, and consent to a background investigation.
8. Must be willing to commit to a two-year commitment and 16 hours per month voluntary service.
9. Must be willing to complete a fitness component test, which includes flexibility, push ups, curl ups, and a shuttle run or a mile and a half run.
10. Must possess a valid G Class Ontario Drivers Licence.
11. If required to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses, vision must not exceed 10/40 correctable to 20/20 with the aid of said eyeglasses or contact lenses. No degree of red/green deficiency is accepted.
12. Will be required to attend all training sessions as directed by the Training Officer.
