Unit
The Chatham-Kent Police (CKPS) Court Services Unit in a uniformed
unit providing case management of all federal, criminal, and provincial
statues and municipal by-laws charges laid by the Chatham-Kent Police
Service. This unit also has the responsibility of providing court
security to the two Court Facilities in Chatham-Kent:

Additionally, the Court Services Unit is also responsible for the
transport of persons in police custody between Court facilities and
correctional institutions. As a result of these duties, this unit has
strong working relationships with the Chatham-Kent’s Crown Attorney’s
Office, Judiciary, Victim-Witness Assistance Program, and Court
Administrations of both Court House and Provincial Offences Court, and
Correctional Facilities.
The CKPS Court Services Unit is currently comprised of 6 constables,
8 special constables, and 1 administrative clerk, with a Sergeant
supervising. Within this complement of officers, Coordinators of the
Domestic Violence Coordinator and the Youth Criminal Justice Act are
assigned to this unit. These constables act as a liaise between external
stakeholders and community groups and the various units within the
police service.
The Court Services Unit is part of the Administrative Support Branch
of the service, reporting to an Inspector and Deputy Chief respectively.
The Administrative Support Inspector also serves as the Chairperson of
the Court Security Committee of these Court Facilities.

Both facilities were recently refurbished from existing
county/township buildings. The Chatham-Kent Court House was the
former site of the Kent County Building, and the Provincial Offences
Court facility is the former Harwich Township office. There is ample
parking at both facilities. Chatham-Kent Court House utilizes a
magnometer to screen all members of the public for weapons prior to
entering the building. Smoking is prohibited at both facilities.
